On the journey to carbon reduction

Lawson’s Dry Hills has proven that you don’t have to be a big wine company to put sustainability measures into action, and that was a key message at their Wine Industry Award field day on July 19, 2022.

Lawson’s Dry Hills are one of the few wine companies to achieve the rigorous ISO accreditation for both Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality.  They are also leading the way in recyclable and biodegradable packaging, generating solar power and water conservation.

Reaching and maintaining those international standards takes time, money and dedication.  Lawson’s Dry Hills don’t have deep pockets or wealthy overseas funders, but they show how it’s possible to invest in sustainability measures and be profitable -

their efforts pay off for the business in efficiency gains and a marketing edge, as well as doing the right thing for the environment.

"We need sustainability champions like Lawsons to demonstrate that small steps can lead to big changes,” said field day guest speaker Ed Massey, GM Sustainability at NZ Winegrowers. And judging by the big turnout from local wineries and other businesses, there’s an appetite to learn from those already successfully on the sustainability journey.

Congratulations to the team at Lawson’s Dry Hills, winners of the Wine Industry Award, sponsored by Wine Marlborough.
